Meet the Friendly Giants of Baja
Experience a unique encounter with the gentle giants of the sea
Gray whales in Magdalena Bay are known worldwide as some of the most sociable and friendly giants of the sea. During the months of January through April, these ocean giants travel from the northern seas to the warm, protected bays and lagoons of the Mexican Baja coasts. Here, they mate and give birth, giving us the amazing opportunity to experience unique encounters from really close.
Magdalena Bay is one of the few places in the world where these gray whales actively come close to scratch themselves against the boats, making it possible to touch, hug, and even kiss them. Getting to know these ocean giants in the company of an expert marine biologist is, without a doubt, a bucket-list experience.
Description
This adventure takes place in the coastal lagoons of Baja California Sur, where we will navigate for around two hours looking for that magical encounter that will live in our memories forever. With a bit of luck, we will enjoy tens of gray whales, and marvel at the playful behavior displayed by the young ones. We depart from Puerto Chale. We recommend booking this gray whale sighting tour in Magdalena Bay during February, because even though it can be done during January and March, the highest abundance occurs during February. To top it all off, we will also see sand dunes, desertic islands, and mangroves that make this adventure even more unique and special.

Itinerary
We will rise early in the morning to board the panga boat for our gray whale watching adventure in Magdalena Bay, departing from Puerto Chale. We usually begin at 9 am. For 2 hours, we will navigate the waters of the bay, where we will have the chance to witness the incredible sight of these majestic animals in their natural habitat. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the grey whale and why is Magdalena Bay special?
The grey whale is known as one of the friendliest and most social marine giants. They migrate from the northern seas to the warm, protected bays of Baja California Sur between January and April to give birth and mate. Magdalena Bay is a privileged spot because it offers unique, close encounters where these majestic creatures actively approach boats.
What is the difference between the 1-Day Tour and the 3-Day VIP Expedition?
The 1-Day Tour is a quick trip departing from Puerto Chale, featuring 2 to 6 hours of whale watching navigation. It is perfect for those with limited time.
The 3-Day VIP Expedition is an immersive experience. It includes multiple 6-hour daily whale safaris, 3 nights of accommodation at an exclusive eco-camp (glamping), all meals, and round-trip transportation from La Paz.
How do I get to Puerto Chale for the Day Tour?
For the 1-Day Tour, ground transportation to Puerto Chale is an optional add-on. We can arrange private transportation (Sedans for 2-3 guests or Sprinter vans for larger groups) for an additional fee. The drive from La Paz is direct, with restrooms available upon arrival at the port.
What is the accommodation and food like on the 3-Day Expedition?
Our exclusive Eco-Camp features luxury glamping tents set in a spectacular natural environment, complete with private bathrooms and hot showers. Tents are double occupancy (single supplements available). You will enjoy three full, fresh meals a day, including traditional dishes and vegetarian options adapted to your dietary needs.
What should I wear and bring on the boat?
Winter on the Pacific coast is cold and windy. We highly recommend dressing in warm layers (windbreakers and fleeces). You should also bring biodegradable sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, lip balm, and a camera. To help keep you warm, we provide a large thermos of hot tea on board.
Is it safe to interact with the grey whales? What if we don’t see them?
Yes, grey whales in Magdalena Bay are famous for their friendly behavior towards humans. However, you must always follow your guide’s instructions to ensure safety and respect for the animals. While it is extremely rare not to see whales during the peak season, wildlife is unpredictable; our expert team will always do their best to ensure a successful encounter.
